KOCHI: With the High Court banning the dumping of waste, the city police are on their toes to catch the law breakers, including those who dump sewage waste on river side and in open areas. The police have registered more than 30 cases within two days of the High Court order.According to Assistant Commissioner M N Ramesh, earlier the police used to catch waste dumpers on the basis of the complaint given by the public. But after the High Court order all police stations have been directed to catch those dumping waste, including those dumping sewage in trucks. “We have been getting complaints that many trucks are dumping sewage on river sides and in isolated areas. Since the High Court has banned such activities, the police will catch anyone engaged in waste dumping,”  Ramesh Said.“The sewage dumpers mainly operate in the night. The shadow police have been deployed in various places to monitor any such illegal practices carried out in the night,” Ramesh added. The police and the shadow police had booked more than 30 people dumping waste in the night. A police official told City Express that it is mainly because of space constraint that people dump waste in open places. “The problem is that we don’t have enough sewage treatment plants or dumping yards in the city. Until these problems are solved, the waste dumping will continue. We can forcibly prevent people from doing such things but it will be better if the corporation makes sure that people have proper place to dump waste and sewage,” the police officer said.
