BANGALORE: One of the wards of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) which is suffering from acute shortage of drinking water is Sanjaynagar Ward. It is not that the BBMP has not taken any measures to mitigate water woes. It is to be noted that among the 14 borewells dug up last year only one among them failed to yield water. Areas such as Bhupasandra, Vinayaka Layout, Excise colony, RMS colony, Nagashettihalli, Yajamana Layout, AECS Layout, Sanjaya Nagar, BPEHCS Layout, Ramakrishnappa Layout, Naidu Layout, Amarjyothi Layout are some of the important localities of Sanjaynagar Ward. “We get Cauvery water on alternate days for 30 minutes. We have to buy water from private water suppliers by paying more than Rs 350 per water tank,’’ says C Keshava, a resident of 3rd Cross of Geddalahalli. The residents also complain about the open drains clogged with garbage and other waste material. “Civic employees visit this area once in a week. They are not doing their job properly. “We have complained to the Corporator about this but in vain,’’ complains K Mallika, a housewife. In few areas, the construction material was dumped on the road thus preventing free movement of vehicles. “The construction of houses under the 22.75 per cent scheme of BBMP is under progress. We are not against the construction of houses for economically poor but dumping of sand and bricks on the road does cause inconvenience to us,’’ said Vinod, a resident. Meanwhile, N M Krishnamurthy, Corporator, said that the BBMP had taken up various development works last year. He says that the BBMP had sanctioned Rs 4 crore to take up development works. “The BBMP had repaired a water fountain of a park at Vinayaka Layout. And many drains were strengthened last year,’’ said the Corporator. Agreeing with the residents on the garbage issue, the corporator said that there were only 120 civic employees to clear the garbage and keep the roads clean in Sanjaya Nagar Ward. “The ward needs a minimum of 200 civic employees to keep the ward free from garbage. As of now, the ward has only three lorries and 12 three-wheelers to transport the garbage to the dumping yard as against the requirement of 18 three-wheelers and five lorries. I expect the BBMP to recruit civic employees for clearing the garbage shortly,’’ said the Corporator. He adds that the BBMP had taken up measures to ensure water supply at all areas of the ward. “The BBMP has sanctioned Rs 3 crore to take up various development works this year. Roads will be concretised and storm water drains to be strengthened at Yajamanappa Layout, Amarjyothi Layout and M N Garden this year,’’ says the corporator.
