THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The World Bank team has in principle agreed to grant loan for the heavy maintenance of 1,000 km road as part of the phase II of Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP). As per the agreement, World Bank would provide an aid of Rs 500 crore for heavy maintenance of 1,000 km of state highways. This amount would be granted in addition to the Rs 750 crore for the upgradation of roads under phase II, raising the loan amount to Rs 1,250 crore. The decision was taken at the meeting held between officials of KSTP and World Bank in New Delhi two weeks ago. The KSTP has invited a tender for the preparation of DPR (Detailed Project Report) and feasibility study for the heavy maintenance of 1,000 km road last month.Meanwhile, the State Government has sought the consent of Department of Economic Affairs for the project. The World Bank officials are expected to arrive in the state again on June 18 to review the works. The KSTP is proceeding with the tender for the second phase. Second phase of the project aims at improving eight corridors which include upgradation of 27.76 km Kasargod-Kanhangad Road, 20.90 km Pilathara-Pappinisseri Road, 4.5 km Taliparamba-Iritty Road, 53.12 km Thalassery-Valavupara Road, 132.2 km Punalur-Ponkunnam-Thodupuzha stretch, 87-km Chengannur-Ettumanoor-Muvattupuzha stretch and 41 km Perumpilavu- Pattambi-Perinthalmanna Road.
