Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) officer Satish Kumar will be the new Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board. He is the first Dalit officer to be appointed as the Railway Board Chairman in 119-year-old history of Indian Railways.
Satish Kumar has over three decades of experience serving in the Indian Railways. He has earlier held several top positions, including General Manager of Railways.
Kumar will be replacing Jaya Verma Sinha, the current CEO of the Railway Board. She is retiring on August 31. Sinha took charge as head of the Railway Board a year ago. She was the first woman to be appointed as the CEO of the Railway Board.
Kumar made a significant contribution in the field of Fog Safety device. His innovation ensured the safe operation of trains even in foggy conditions.
Satish Kumar is a 1986 batch Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) officer. He joined the Railways in March 1988. His initial postings included Jhansi Division of Central Railway and Banaras Diesel Locomotive Works at Banaras, later renamed Banaras Locomotive Works.
He has also served in the North Eastern Railway division at Gorakhpur and Patiala Locomotive Works. He played a detrimental role in enhancing the operational capability of the division.
Kumar completed his BTech in Mechanical Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur (MNIT). He holds a PG Diploma in Operations Management and Cyber Law from Indira Gandhi National Open University.
