HYDERABAD: A 24-year-old woman attempted to set herself on fire outside the LB Nagar police station, protesting against police inaction over her complaint against her lover and demanding that the police marry her to him. The woman, who doused herself with kerosene, was prevented from setting herself afire by the police.Sameera, a resident of Baireddynagar colony, fell in love with a mechanic Ashok Reddy, a native of Mahaboobnagar, a few months ago. Ashok promised to marry her but since the last few weeks, started avoiding her phone calls and messages. and When she tried to meet him at his mechanic shop, he refused to do so. An angry Sameera then lodged a complaint at the L B Nagar police station saying that Ashok had cheated her. But alleging that the police did not act on her complaint, she came to the police station along with kerosene and attempted suicide. Police officials sitting inside, rushed out and snatched the kerosene bottle away. Meanwhile, inspector Sreedhar Reddy denied that they did not act on Sameera’s case. “We tried to arrest him on the same day the complaint was lodged but Ashok was absconding. We arrested him on Monday and registered a cheating case against him. We also counselled him for more than two hours but he is reluctant to marry her,” the inspector said. Meanwhile, police have registered a case under section 309 (suicide attempt) against Sameera.
