Amid the controversy over AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi's statement against death penalty to 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon, reports of a former head of the Pakistan desk of the Research and Analysis sharing a similar opinion has come to light.
B Raman, who coordinated the operation to bring back Yakub Memon to India from Karachi in 1994 wrote an unpublished article in 2007 saying he must not be hanged.
In his article on Memon, Raman had said that his cooperation with investigating agencies needed to be taken into consideration when deciding whether the death penalty should be implemented.
Meanwhile, Memon has moved the Supreme Court seeking to quash the death warrant against him by the TADA court. Memon has claimed that relevant guidelines were not followed in the procedure of awarding death sentence to him.
The Supreme Court had on Tuesday dismissed the curative petition of Memon, who is lodged in Nagpur Central Prison.
