CHENNAI: A grand musical performance at the Music Academy on Friday will kickstart ‘Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities’, a 15-month program organised by the German Foreign Office to mark the ‘Year of Germany in India’ celebrations in Chennai, said Stefan Weckbach, Consul General of Germany. At a press conference here on Wednesday, Weckbach said the celebrations would commemorate completion of 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Events would take place in seven cities and the same gesture would be reciprocated by the Indian government when it would celebrate the year of India in Germany next year, he said.Elaborating on the cultural and political ties between the two countries, Weckbach said India was one of the first countries to recognise the Federal Republic of Germany in March 1951. Fruitful collaboration has been demonstrated and the relationship has subsequently reached a strategic level with the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Germany and Chancellor Angela Merkel to India.Director of Goethe Institute Karl Pechatscheck said events would cover politics, business, and music and culture. The focal theme of the programs in Chennai would be ‘Human Spaces-Cultural Activities’, addressing the rapid changes that the city is going through. The highlight of the program would be a set of multi-purpose pavilions that would be erected in the city. These pavilions have been designed by renowned German artist Markus Heinsdorff using a blend of patterns unique to Germany and India with, he said.
