As many as 13 persons, including 10 police officials, were injured after a satyagraha held by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha(BJYM), the youth outfit of the BJP, demanding the takeover of the government land allegedly encroached by Muslim League leader P V Abdul Wahab, turned violent on Thursday.
The police used teargas shells and force to disperse the BJYM activists who gathered to attend the satyagraha and staged a road blockade at Cheruvannur, where the land is reportedly encroached by Wahab. According to police, the tension started after Yuva Morcha activists pelted stones at the police while Yuva Morcha state secretary Ravi Thelathu was addressing the gathering. The police resorted to lathicharge and used teargas to disperse the unruly crowd.
Around 10 police personnel -- Cheruvannur CI E Sunilkumar, Feroke SI Anilkumar and police constables of AR Camp-suffered injuries and were admitted to Beach Hospital, Koya Hospital and Medical College Hospital. Yuva Morcha district vice-president Sudheesh Kootalida, state committee member T P Satheesh and BJP Vadakara Mandalam committee member Sreedharan were also hospitalised after suffering injuries in the violence.
In this, the injuries of Sreedharan, who was admitted to the MIMS Hospital here, are serious.
Later, the activists held a dharna in front of the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Mananchira, in protest against the police action, disrupting the vehicular traffic in the city for hours in the evening. Yuva Morcha leaders alleged that the police were attacking their activists who had been protesting in a peaceful manner. The leaders said that 12 of their activists were injured in the police action. Nallalam police have registered a case on charges of rioting against the BJYM workers.
BJP state president V Muraleedharan, Yuva Morcha state president V V Rajesh and BJP district president P Raghunath attended the protest march.
