The opening day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh was curtailed by rain and only 35 overs of play was possible with weather first forcing a delayed start. India struck early through Akash Deep as he sent back both the Bangladesh openers before Mominul Haque and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto repaired the damage to take lunch without further damage. After lunch, Ravichandran Ashwin outfoxed Shanto to have him LBW. And then bad light forced the players off the field and rain arrived resulting in the play being called off around 2:56 PM IST.

While speaking to the media on Thursday, India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar had said the team was yet to finalise their playing XI due to the prediction of rain on the opening day. Eventually, weather did play a role in their decision with Rohit Sharma and co taking the field with the same eleven that defeated Bangladesh inside four days in the Chennai Test recently.

Had the weather stayed clear, it was possible that left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav would’ve been included for a pacer. However, it seems the Kuldeep will have to continue his wait for a first Test in front of his home fans.

Brief Scores: Bangladesh 107/3 in 35 overs (Mominul Haque 40*, Najmul Hossain Shanto 31, Shadman Islam 24, Mushfiqur Rahim 6*, Zakir Hasan 0) vs India (Akash Deep 2/34 in 10 overs, Ravichandran Ashwin 1/22 in 9 overs, Jasprit Bumrah 0/19 in 9 overs, Mohammed Siraj 0/27 in 7 overs) at the close of play on Day 1
