The Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation revealed that BTS leader Kim Namjoon, popularly known by his stage name RM, had silently made a 100 million won (over Rs. 57.1 lakh) donation for the preservation, restoration, and utilization of cultural assets overseas in September 2021.
Soompi, a Korean media portal, reported these donations were put to use for the conservation of Joseon Dynasty hwarots, a ceremonial garment worn by royal women during the Goryeo and Joseon dynasty, at the Los Angeles County Museum for Art (LACMA). Currently, there are 40 hwarots in the world, 30 of which are in South Korea and 10 overseas. Additionally, RM’s donations will be used to create a catalogue introducing Korean paintings.
RM had been recognized by Arts Council Korea as one of the Patrons of The Arts in 2020 when he donated 100 million won to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In addition, he also loaned a sculpture piece from his collection, “Horse" by sculptor Kwon Jin Gyu, to the Seoul Museum of Art.
