Can High Cholesterol Lead To Increased Level Of Uric Acid? Expert Answers
There is no metabolic link between them, but certain dietary factors associated with high cholesterol can increase uric acid.

Our body needs cholesterol, a waxy substance found in blood, for the formation of healthy cells. High levels of cholesterol, however, can lead to the risk of heart diseases. It can also lead to the formation of uric acid. In an interview with Dainik Jagran English, Dr Pankaj Ranjan said that increased cholesterol levels and uric acid are two different metabolic conditions. There is no metabolic link between them, but certain dietary factors associated with high cholesterol can increase uric acid. Dr Pankaj has also suggested some measures to control uric acid.

1. Consuming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein can control cholesterol levels.

2. Reducing protein-rich foods and moderating alcohol intake can also help in lowering uric acid levels.

3. According to the doctor, regular physical exercise like cycling and walking also aids in controlling cholesterol and uric acid levels. Exercise helps in shedding the excess kilos. Weight management is an important factor in preventing uric acid accumulation.

4. As per the doctor, it is advisable to get a medical examination if the cholesterol level and uric acid level do not decrease even after these steps. Doctors will tell you the correct treatments and medicines that will control the cholesterol and uric acid levels. Medications like Statins are prescribed to keep cholesterol levels under control. Medicines such as allopurinol or febuxostat help in reducing uric acid levels.

Uric acid is produced as a byproduct of purine digestion. Purines occur naturally in the body and can also be found in certain foods such as meats, seafood, and alcoholic beverages. Uric acid is normally dissolved in our blood, filtered by the kidneys, and excreted with the help of urine. Uric acid can be increased if you consume too many purine-rich foods. Hyperuricemia is when uric acid levels remain increased in the body, frequently leading to gout. High uric acid levels cause joint pain. This should not be taken lightly. Negligence can prove disastrous to the kidneys and lead to a variety of other serious problems. Uric acid should be tested regularly so that it can be detected early on. High levels of uric acid is a problem that can be resolved with timely treatment.
