The Spring/Summer 2018 Haute Couture shows had a lot to teach us about springtime beauty this week. Makeup fans, take note.
Spike your lashes
This season's shows championed spiky, doll-like lashes that were inspired by the 1960s, yet thoroughly modern. Dior led the way by painting on exaggerated eyeliner representing bold lashes, pulling it out for a surrealist effect and framing the look with diaphanous eye masks created by the milliner Stephen Jones. Giorgio Armani Privé used falsies at the outer corner of the eye, pairing them with aquamarine and blue eyeshadows for a mystical look, while Elie Saab kept things subtly spiky.
Black lipstick is back
Black lipstick could be the new red, if the highly-pigmented shades on view during this season's shows are anything to go by. RVDK Ronald Van der Kemp's show featured matching black lipstick and eyeshadow for a high-end grunge aesthetic, while floating liner and lacquered black lipstick made for an arresting look at Jean Paul Gaultier. Hyum Mi Nielsen kept the black lipstick smudged, with a satin finish.
Big hair don't care
Sculpted, abstract hair styles were the beauty focus at Guo Pei, where the models had their locks interwoven with metallic accessories. Franck Sorbier created bushy, vertical braids and RVDK Ronald Van der Kemp opted for everything from larger-than-life top knots to mohawks. Towering wigs cut into pudding bowl shapes stole the show at Jean Paul Gaultier.
