World Elephant Day is an annual international event held on August 12 to promote the conservation and protection of elephants worldwide. On this momentous day, we have an opportunity to draw attention to the problems that elephants face, such as habitat loss, poaching of ivory, conflicts between humans and elephants, and the need for increased conservation efforts. The goal of this day is to establish a sustainable environment in which animals are not exploited but cared for.

World Elephant Day History
On August 12, 2012, Patricia Sims of Canada and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand—a project of HM Queen Sirikit of Thailand—joined forces to establish World Elephant Day. Patricia has been in charge of World Elephant Day ever since.
Since the beginning of its efforts to raise global awareness, it has partnered with 100 organisations dedicated to elephant conservation and has reached countless people worldwide. By commemorating World Elephant Day, millions of people throughout the world have demonstrated their concern for the condition of elephants and their willingness to provide a hand in any way they can.
World Elephant Day Significance
Elephants are hugely significant grazers and browsers; they consume enormous amounts of grass daily and disperse seeds wherever they go.
Additionally, they aid in forming the Asian landscape’s frequently dense vegetation. For instance, elephants cut trees and leave openings in them so that sunlight may reach newly planted seedlings. This promotes plant growth and the natural regeneration of forests.
World Elephant Day provides a platform for groups and people to get together and raise awareness of the problems that elephants face. With the help of this strong, united voice from across the world, lawmakers, citizens and governments can work together to develop and implement conservation strategies that will ensure that elephants and their habitat remain safe and intact for future generations to enjoy.
Different Types of Elephants
Elephants are classified into two main species: Asian and African elephants.
Due to growing population and industrialisation, habitat encroachment is now considerably worse for Asian and African elephants, which increases the likelihood of human-elephant conflict.
World Elephant Day has been successful in raising awareness of elephants’ threats and the need for global protection.
