Once a box office powerhouse known for delivering super hits, Akshay Kumar is currently facing a challenging phase in his career, with several of his recent films failing to perform. This year alone, two of his major releases, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Sarfira, turned out to be significant flops, causing considerable losses for their producers.
Akshay, one of the few outsiders who made it big in Bollywood, has a reputation for starring in films that address socially relevant issues. His body of work includes movies like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha (2017), which tackled the elimination of open defecation; Pad Man (2018), highlighting the need for affordable sanitary pads in rural areas; and OMG 2 (2023), which focused on the importance of sex education. Additionally, Akshay has portrayed characters in films based on real-life events, such as Airlift (2016), Rustom (2016), Mission Mangal (2019), and Mission Raniganj (2023).
In a recent interview with India Today, Akshay Kumar opened up about his choice of films and revealed that many of his industry peers and friends have questioned his selections. He explained that his upcoming film Khel Khel Mein also addresses a relevant societal issue but does so through the lens of comedy. “Some films and the subjects they explore are so compelling that your heart wants to do them. Many people, including friends and critics, have asked, ‘Why make films on sanitary pads and toilets?’ When I made a movie on sex education, there was opposition. But I enjoy doing such movies and will continue to do so if given the chance,” Akshay shared.
Akshay Kumar is now set to make his return to the silver screen with Khel Khel Mein, a multi-starrer comedy-drama directed by Mudassar Aziz. The film, featuring Taapsee Pannu, Ammy Virk, Vaani Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Aditya Seal, and Pragya Jaiswal, is scheduled for release on August 15. Akshay hopes this film will mark a turning point in his recent box office fortunes.
