Since her impressive performance as Paloma, in James Bond No Time To Die, Ana de Armas left audiences eager to see her star in her own action film. Now, she’s taking the spotlight in the John Wick universe as Eve Macarro in the upcoming spin off, Ballerina. The recently released trailer is packed with intense action and features Macarro’s transformation into a deadly assassin on a path to vengeance. Unlike Keanu Reeves’ character, who was punishing those who had killed his beloved pet, Macarro had a traumatic childhood and she’s on a mission to take down a dangerous group of hitmen, who killed her father. The gripping trailer has a similar John Wick vibe, filled with tension, style and tragic backstory.
Other than Reeves, Ballerina features several familiar faces from the John Wick universe. Ian McShane returns as Winston, the owner of the Continental Hotel, who first meets a young Macarro in a train station. Late Lance Reddick also reprises his role as Charon, who welcomes Macarro at the Continental. Anjelica Huston appears as the Director, the head of the Ruska Roma.
According to the Ballerina trailer, Winston is the one who recruits young Eve Macarro and introduces her to the Director’s ballerina group. In this unique training programme, she not only learns the art of being a ballet dancer but also develops her skills needed to become a killer. Early in her training, Macarro receives a crucial lesson from her instructor, who tells her, “To stop the assassin, you must become the assassin. You will always be weaker. You will always be smaller. You want to win? Improvise. Adapt. Cheat."
After numerous thrilling moments in the trailer, the final few seconds feature Ana de Armas’ character, meeting her idol, John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves. During their meeting, she tells him, “You’re him. The one they call the Baba Yaga. How do I start doing what you do?" John responds, “Looks like you already have."
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Ballerina was originally scheduled to release in June 2024. However, in February this year, Lionsgate decided to postpone the film to give John Wick director Chad Stahelski more time to work with Ballerina director Len Wiseman. Together, they enhanced the film’s action sequences and met the high standards set by the John Wick franchise.
Other than Ana de Armas, Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Late Lance Reddick and Anjelica Huston, Ballerina also introduces Gabriel Byrne, Catalina Sandino Moreno and Norman Reedus in the John Wick universe.
