Among many actresses who are on their way of carving a niche for themselves in pan-India films is Shalini Pandey. The 31-year old actress has worked in Tamil, Telugu as well as Hindi films, trying to gain a foothold in all of them. Shalini celebrated her birthday on Monday, September 23. Born in Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, Shalini dabbled in theatre before choosing cinema as a career. Unlike most debutantes who struggle for a while before tasting success, Shalini made a significant impact with her very first film. She was cast as the female lead opposite Vijay Devarakonda in Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Arjun Reddy. Although the film had its share of controversies, it was a big critical and commercial success and Shalini’s performance was highly appreciated. She won hearts and became the new crush of both the Telugu states.
Offers came pouring in and she appeared in films like NTR: Kathanayakudu, 118, and Tamil films 100% Kadhal and Gorilla. She also played a college student in Iddari Lokam Okate. With the exception of 118, none of the films made a significant splash at the box office. Her entry into Hindi cinema started with Bamfaad and then Jayeshbhai Jordaar opposite Ranveer Singh. She had to wait till the Netflix film Maharaja opposite Junaid Khan to receive accolades from the Hindi audience.
In an interview talking about her career,Shalini Pandey said she ran away from her home to Mumbai because her father did not want her to act in films and wanted her to be an engineer instead. She said that she had to share a room with boys in Mumbai and go to auditions from there. Shalini also spoke about being subjected to body shaming. She said she was chubby when she entered the movie industry and was trolled for her weight.
