In 2015, director Mohan Raja made a film different from his filmography up until that point. Previously, Mohan Raja had made only Tamil remakes of films in other languages. For this, the media and critics had dubbed him a ‘remake master’. With the 2015 release of Thani Oruvan, he broke away from that mould, with the film being his first original. He had also penned the story of the film himself. Apart from being a blockbuster success, Thani Oruvan was also a musical hit, with the songs composed by Hip Hop Tamizha.
Following the success of his debut independent album Hip Hop Tamizhan, Mohan Raja advised Adhi to compose the tracks with the essence of his independent music project. As a result, he composed two songs based on the indie music format. The biggest hit of the album, Theemai Dhan Vellum had lead actor Arvind Swamy have a voiceover on the song. It was not featured in the film but was used for promotions.
The story behind how the song Theemai Dhan Vellum was composed is quite interesting. For Thani Oruvan, Mohan Raja went for a reversal in technique. In general, the music for a film is already composed and bought by the film production, before shooting even commences. But for this film, the director shot huge portions of the film, showed the scenes to Hiphop Tamizha and demanded the songs befitting the situation. During one of the shooting schedules, Mohan Raja and Tamizha were in a cab and the filmmaker went to have tea. It was during that interval that Hiphop Tamizha composed the entire Theemai Dhan Vellum song. Mohan Raja returned after having tea to find the song completed.
The song became a huge hit and had become a famous ringtone for many among the Tamil-speaking diaspora. Apart from Arvind Swamy, the movie starred Nayanthara and Jayam Ravi in lead roles.
