Ian McKellen, the renowned actor known for his extensive work in both theatre and film, recently experienced a mishap during a performance that has raised concerns among his fans. According to Variety, during a performance of Player Kings at the Noel Coward Theatre in London’s West End, Ian fell unexpectedly during a battle scene and required immediate medical attention. The incident caused the audience to be asked to leave the theatre, and Ian’s evening show had to be cancelled as a result.
After this, a representative from the theatre released a statement and assured the public about Ian’s condition. The representative said, “Thank you to our audience and the general public for their well wishes following Ian’s fall during this evening’s performance of Player Kings.”
“Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team has assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits. The production has made the decision to cancel the performance on Tuesday 18 June so Ian can rest. Those affected will be contacted by their point of purchase as soon as possible tomorrow. Thank you to doctors Rachel and Lee who were on hand in the audience and to all the venue staff for their support,” read the official statement, according to Variety.
In his professional life, Ian McKellen is considered one of the greatest actors of his generation. He specialises in Shakespearean roles, including that of Macbeth, King Lear, Richard II, Coriolanus, Iago and Richard III.
This isn’t the first time McKellen has had to cancel a performance due to an injury. In 2018, he had reportedly cancelled a performance of King Lear due to a leg injury. On that occasion, instead of performing, McKellen engaged with the audience through a Q&A session.
