Director S Shankar is all set to release Indian 2 in theatres this month. While he is bringing back Kamal Haasan in the lead, he chose Anirudh Ravichander over AR Rahman for the film’s music. The filmmaker has now revealed why Rahman did not reprise his role as the music director of Indian 2. Shankar said that Rahman was busy with multiple projects and as a result, Anirudh was brought on board.
“When we started work on Indian 2, AR Rahman was already working on the BGM of 2.0 and I needed the songs soon. I didn’t want to overburden him with Indian 2 and I also liked Anirudh’s music. His music was really popular and I thought why not sign him on,” Shankar said at a media event of the film.
Anirudh weighed in on replacing Rahman with some help from Rajinikanth. The musician quoted a dialogue from the 2007 Shankar and Rajini’s film Sivaji: The Boss to answer the question. “After six, comes seven… but who comes after Rahman sir?” he said, leaving everyone grinning. He added. “I know the expectations are high given how the sequel comes 28 years after the first film. Rahman sir’s music inspires me.”
The first song the musician released was in May 2024. The song was titled Paaraa. He then released Neelorpam, later that month. The music album officially released in June.
About Indian 2:
A sequel to the 1996 film Indian, Indian 2 is one of its biggest projects by Shankar. While the movie is already a big-budget one, Kamal Hassan has reportedly demanded a remuneration of a whopping Rs 150 crores. Apart from Kamal, the movie will feature Rakul Preet Singh, Kajal Aggarwal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Siddharth, Jason Lambert, Gulshan Grover, Bobby Simha and others in prominent roles. The film is produced by Red Giant Movies and Lyca Productions and Anirudh Ravichander has been roped in for music. Shankar has also used CGI and body doubles to bring departed actors Vivek and Nedumudi Venu to life on the big screen.
Indian 2 was announced in 2018. The first phase of shooting started in 2019. However, the lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic brought the filming to a halt. The unfortunate accident on set that resulted in the death of three crew members also put the film on hold for years. Later, the shooting was also postponed due to a clash of opinions between Lyca Productions and the film’s director S Shankar. After a long wait and settling all the issues, the filming has finally been completed.
Indian 2 is set to release on July 12. The film will clash with Akshay Kumar’s Sarfira.
