The third installment of the ‘Insidious’ franchise promised to be the most terrifying of all as it was about the origin. This film is a prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family in ‘Insidious’.
The film starts with Quinn Brenner (Stefanie Scott) appearing at the door of the recently retired, Elise (Lin Shaye) to help her make contact with her late mother, who she thought was trying to contact
her. Elsie denies her request and warns her to refrain from doing any contact on her own, her line, “If you call out to one of the dead, all of them can hear you”, is the beginning of the rollercoaster full of
moments of silent terror and mini heart attacks.
The story takes a major turn when a spirit which cannot ‘breathe’ starts feeding on Quinn’s soul leaving her on the verge of dying. Quinn’s father Sean (Dermont Mulroney) seeks help from the two novice ghost
busters named Tucker and Specs. Elsie decides to help the family after she has a vision of Quinn and the spirit. She goes to ‘The Further’ where the spirit lives, to bring back Quinn.
The story of the film is the usual ‘good vs. evil’ with predictable endings. The emotional scenes are weakly enacted. The chemistry between the characters is weak and no fatherly love is felt from the acting of Dermont Mulroney, making the story telling and non-horror parts slow and draggy. However, everything takes a backseat during the horror scenes. Leigh Whannell has done a brilliant job in building the
memento for the spookiness in the film. It is not the ghost or the story of the spirit that scares you, it the air and the silence before a scary moment that sends shivers down your spine.
Every scare and scream in the film is not only the horror element but also takes forward the story of the film. The scene where Quinn is possessed by the spirit, breaking her already broken legs, is gross and scary, giving the perfect spice to a conventional horror film. The first half of the film is edgy and keeps you intrigues and scared, it is the second half that gives you a feel; of all the goodiness and takes away the feel of the first half. Whannel’s direction is perfect when it comes to the true sense of the film, paranormal activities and maintaining spooky air, but lacks in capturing the humanely emotions and chemistry.
Lin Shaye does justice to her role as Elsie and Stefanie Scott brings realism in her acting. Dermont Mulroney lacks fatherly love, leaving his casting as the father doubtful. Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson
are funny as the Ghostbusters and a keep justified humor in horror. The cinematography is spooky and horror like, music is not too loud and plays the most important part in creating an air of terror.
Insidious Chapter 3 is all about the silence, the air and the stretches before the horror scenes and the faint hearts are advised to keep their hands over their eyes to keep their heart beats in check. It the horror entertainer which makes up for the sloppiness which the franchise fans experienced in ‘Insidious 2’.
