Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan has opened up about the thunderous response that his latest film Kalki 2898 AD has been receiving from all around the world. During a special press meet in Chennai, the actor, who is currently busy promoting his upcoming Indian 2, also spoke about his limited screen time in the Nag Ashwin’s directorial.
“In Kalki, I have played a small role that makes an appearance for a few minutes only,” Kamal was quoted as saying by Indian Express.com. “My real part in the film has only begun and I will have more to do in the second part. So, I watched this film as a fan and I was astonished.”
The actor continued, “We have been seeing many signifiers that Indian cinema is moving towards global entertainment, and Kalki 2898 AD is one among them. Nag Ashwin carefully handled the subject of mythology without any religious bias. Across the world, only Japan, China, and Greek civilizations can come close to the Indian heritage of storytelling. Ashwin has chosen stories from that and has executed it with a lot of patience by bringing everyone together.”
Kamal was all praise for Amitabh Bachchan’s terrific performance in the film. “I don’t know if I should call him a veteran or a fresh actor. He has done the film that well.”
Not many would know this but Kamal Haasan took about a year to sign Kalki 2898 AD as he had self-doubt. At the film’s pre-release event in Mumbai recently, producer Aswini Dutt’s daughter Swapna Dutt said, “One of the most difficult casting ever was Kamal sir.” Prabhas added, “Kamal sir, yeah, he was so worried.” Swapna then said, “You know we were shooting, but then like, ‘Yaskin, when is Yaskin coming? The whole film is Yaskin but where is Yaskin?’ And how would you cast this person who is equal and true or mightier than these two superheroes? Who is it? And then we could only think of Kamal sir. It took us one year to figure this out.”
