Hyderabad: It was on this very day exactly nine years ago that Hrithik Roshan’s career received a new lease of life, when 'Krrish' opened to a fabulous response at the box office and gave Indian cinema its most memorable superhero off all time.
Here is a look at why this Rakesh Roshan-directed film was not just merely a successful follow up to 'Koi Mil Gaya', but the beginning of a revolution that impressed children and adults alike. And this made it the best franchise ever in Bollywood.
It featured a larger than life yet relatable protagonist: A closer look at the valiant superhero Krrish reveals that he is in many ways the very personification of machismo. Krrish is strong, well-built and above all gifted with superhuman strength. However, at the same time he is shown to be a vulnerable young man who longs to know more about his dad and leans on his grandmother(played by Rekha) for emotional support. These contrasting shades of his personality make him a strong yet relatable character.
'Krrish' is a tribute to Indian mythology: At a very basic level 'Krrish' is a story which highlights how good always prevails over evil no how difficult the circumstances might be. This theme formed the very basis of epics such as ‘The Ramayana’. Moreover, the lead characters name (Krishna/Krrish) is a clear cut reference to a revered god. Hence, the film can be regarded as a fitting homage to Indian mythology.
It celebrates the Indian family: By laying emphasis on the special bond between Krishna/Krrish and his grandmother the film highlights that grandparents are an integral part of one’s life, thanks to their wise and supporting nature. Moreover, 'Krrish' also celebrates the importance of the patriarch by showcasing the heart wrenching way in which the protagonist longs to meet his father. So in a way ‘Krrish’ reasserts the sacred nature of relations.
The film introduced fans to Hrithik the actor: It was in 2000 that Hrithik Roshan made an impressive debut, when he starred in 'Kaho Naa Pyaar Hain'. The film featured 'Duggu' in a lover boy avatar and helped him establish himself as a bankable star. However, it was 'Krrish' which helped him showcase his acting abilities to the fullest. In it, he essayed to contrasting characters with absolute ease, proving his versatility as a performer.
Hrithik risked his life for it: 'Krrish' boasted of quite a few death defying stunts and action scenes. While shooting for one of these scenes Hrithik met with a “freak accident”, when one of the wires attached/tied to him snapped. The superstar fell from a height of 50 fifty but luckily did not pick up any major injuries as he landed on a canopy.
It redefined the use of special effects: Keeping in mind the project’s grand scale, its makers hired a reputed Indian special effects firm, Prasad EFX to work on the VFX. A team comprising nearly 100 experts was assigned to work on 'Krrish'. The team did a wonderful job applying techniques like full body scan and so on. The results were marvelous to say the least.
It was a complete package:'Krrish' wasn’t just about action or stunts. Its narrative contained liberal doses of romance, drama and emotion making a treat for all and sundry. Moreover, the film also boasted of some catchy numbers which were composed by Rajesh Roshan.
It proved that Nasseruddin Shah was a force to be reckoned with: The crackling chemistry between Hrithik Roshan and his onscreen nemesis Nasseruddin Shah was served as a major highlight of the film. Essaying the role of scientist, Shah delivered a mesmerizing performance, using his gripping voice to add a new dimension to the character.
'Krrish' was a true trendsetter: The tremendous success attained by 'Krrish' proved that Indian audiences were more than willing to accept films revolving around superheroes. This encouraged filmmakers to step out of their comfort zones, resulting in films such as 'Ra One' and 'Drona'. While 'Ra One' was successful, 'Drona' failed at the box office.
