Nag Ashwin’s directorial venture, Kalki 2898 AD is one of the biggest films made in India, both in terms of box office collection and star power. The film boasts a stellar cast including Deepika Padukone, Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. Not just that, Nag Ashwin also managed to bring in major celebrities like SS Rajamouli, Ram Gopal Varma and Dulquer Salman among others as cameo features.
Speaking to The Indian Express about how he managed to pull off this feat, Nag Ashwin said, “I had to convince them (SS Rajamouli and Ram Gopal Varma) and they were gracious enough to come on board to support the film.”
He added, “The four main actors we have on board are on everyone’s wishlist. Amitabh Bachchan was my only choice for the role of Ashwatthama, who in the Mahabharata is considered to be a great warrior. Bachchan Sir is one of the biggest stars of our country. His character is supposed to be 8-foot tall and very powerful due to the divine blessings he has received. His fight scenes with Prabhas, who is considered to be one of the biggest action heroes of contemporary cinema, was a dream for us to pull off.”
Previously, director Nag Ashwin also lauded Deepika’s natural instinct for her character in Kalki 2898 AD, stating, “She is the most important part of the story. We had a lot of discussions on it when we were writing as well. I think the simplest answer that we arrived at was whose character do you remove and the story does not exist? And that became Deepika’s character. Because if you remove her character, there is no story. There is no Kalki.”
Released on June 27, the film gained an overwhelming response from the audience and has earned over Rs 1000 crore at the worldwide box office. Recently, Big B also took to his social handle and penned a gratitude note for the success of the film. “T 5062 – the essence of KALKI resounds within and without .. and my gracious gratitude,” he wrote. Fans are now eagerly waiting for Kalki’s sequel.
