Maanaadu marked a grand comeback film for Silambarasan, aka, Simbu. He had been away from the spotlight after delivering a string of failures. The film left Simbu fans ecstatic. There were reports that one of the key reasons, why the film worked was the combination of SJ Suryah and Simbu. As per the latest buzz, Venkat Prabhu had initially approached Arvind Swamy to play SJ Suryah’s DCP Dhanushkodi’s role in Maanaadu.

In an interview, Arvind Swamy revealed that he was supposed to play the role of SJ Suryah in Maanaadu. However, “due to scheduling conflicts”, he asked for a month-long extension to join the shoot. But the production team could not wait for that long and he respected their decision. The actor further shared, “I haven’t watched Maanaadu yet because when I heard the story, I completely immersed myself in that character, and it’s difficult for me to see someone else in that role. But I will watch Maanaadu one day,” he said.

Maanaadu hit the theatres on November 25, 2021, and received widespread acclaim from audiences and critics alike. The film incorporated not just the sci-fi time loop, but other commercial elements to be able to strike a chord with the audience and keep them entertained. Many publications even called the film to be one of the best Tamil films of all time and one of the best Indian films of 2021.

On the film’s opening day, it crossed Rs 14 crore in Tamil Nadu. Its first-weekend collection was around Rs 65 crore. Within just four days of its release, the film reached a break-even.
