Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover made history as he took Record of the Year for his politically provocative This Is America— the first hip-hop track to win that honour, while night’s biggest award– Album of the Year– went to British singer Kacey Musgraves for Golden Hour.
This is America, about police brutality and racism, also took Grammys for Song of the Year, Best Music Video and Best Rap Performance. But Gambino was not present at the show to celebrate the milestone. However, Canadian rapper Drake, who had been expected to skip the ceremony, turned up to accept the Grammy for Best Rap Song for God’s Plan. He got cut off from finishing his acceptance speech though.
The awards show hosted by Alicia Keys was dominated by live performances by female musicians, including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Dolly Parton, Musgraves and H.E.R.
Best New Artist Grammy went to British singer Dua Lipa. While Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy won the Best Rap Album, making her the first solo female artist to win the honour. Cardi B, who was nominated for five 2019 awards, won her first Grammy for Invasion of Privacy, beating out fellow nominees Nipsey Hussle; Pusha T and Travis Scott. Mac Miller, who passed away in September, was also nominated for Swimming.
Cardi B teared up when thanking her 6-month-old daughter. She said, “I’m not just saying thank you because she’s my daughter. When I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete. We were like, ‘We have to get this album done so I can shoot these videos while I’m still not showing.’ And it was very long nights.” Cardi B was also nominated for best record, best pop duo/group performance, best rap performance and producer of the year.
Meanwhile, Musgraves won four Grammys in total for Country Pop crossover Golden Hour, her critically-acclaimed third album. She dedicated the award to “my sweet husband” with whom she fell in love as she recorded the album. Lady Gaga won three trophies, including Best Pop Performance for Joanne and Best Pop Duet for Shallow, from the Oscar-nominated film A Star Is Born.
The highlight of the show was Michelle Obama’s surprise appearance during the opening address at the ceremony. Keys kicked off the show by inviting Obama, 55, along with Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jennifer Lopez, to share personal anecdotes about how music has changed their lives and empowered them as women.
“From the Motown records I wore out on the Southside to the ‘Who Run the World’ songs that fueled me through this last decade, music has always helped me tell my story,” Obama said, referring to the Chicago neighbourhood where she grew up.
Among those remembered during this year’s In Memoriam tribute were James Ingram, Roy Clark, Nancy Wilson, Charles Aznavour, Vic Damone, Carol Channing, Joe Jackson, James Wright, Gary Burden, Avicii, Ed King, John Perry Barlow, Tony Joe White, Mac Miller, Roy Hargrove, Cecil Taylor, Bill Watrous, Geoff Emerick, Yvonne Staples, Randy Scruggs, Roger Clark, Charles Neville and Aretha Franklin.
