Casting director Mukesh Chhabra has made a controversial statement about the Hindu mythological character Ravana from Ramayana. Chhabra, who decided the case for Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming movie Ramayana, recently appeared on Ranveer Allahbadia’s podcast when he opined that Ravana was right in his own way.
“Yaar woh bhi toh pyaar mein hi they na (He was also in love, wasn’t he)?” Mukesh said as quoted by Indian Express and then added, “He wanted revenge, but he was in love as well. As far as I understand Raavan, he was evil and vengeful, but his revenge was driven by love for his sister. He had to do what he had to do for his sister. Woh bhi apni taraf se theek they (He was right in his own way). In war, both sides believe they’re on the right side. But ultimately, Raavan was driven by love.”
In 2020, Saif Ali Khan also faced backlash when he said that he would present a ‘humane’ version of Ravana in Om Raut’s movie, Adipurush. “It’s interesting to play a demon king, less strictures in that. But we will make him humane, up the entertainment quotient, justify his abduction of Sita and the war with Ram as revenge for what was done to his sister Surpanakha by Lakshman, who cut off her nose,” Saif told Mid-Day.
However, after facing backlash, Saif apologised for his statement and said, “I’ve been made aware that one of my statements during an interview, has caused a controversy and hurt people’s sentiments. This was never my intention or meant that way. I would like to sincerely apologise to everybody and withdraw my statement.”
In Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, KGF star Yash, who is also co-producing the movie, is likely to play Ravana’s role. However, there is no official confirmation regarding this as of now. The film will present Ranbir Kapoor as Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita. Reportedly, the makers have also roped in Sunny Deol for the role of Hanuman.
Even though Ramayana’s release date has not been announced as of now, the film is likely to hit theatres in 2027.
