Audience or viewers of today’s generation are spoilt for choices, when it comes to content. Be it films, TV serials or OTT, we have a lot to choose from. In the 80s and 90s, the audience had only a few TV shows which they cherished. Doordarshan’s serials are still remembered today for its casting and exceptional script and storytelling. From Doordarshan, emerged many actors who gained stardom later. Let’s take a look at some of these actors today.
Shah Rukh Khan
The Baadshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan began his career on the small screen. His acting career kickstarted in 1988 with the TV serial Fauji, where he portrayed the role of Abhimanyu Rai. He also starred in other soaps like Dil Dariya, Umeed, Mahan Karz, Wagle Ki Duniya and Circus to name a few. In 1992, he finally made his debut with Deewana in Bollywood and has ever since been ruling the industry.
Vidya Balan
One of the most talented and top actresses in the industry is Vidya Balan. She is known for her famous movies like Parineeta, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, The Dirty Picture and Kahaani. She too started off her acting career from Doordarshan. Vidya Balan was featured in one of the most famous sitcoms on TV, Hum Paanch.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui
A graduate of the National School of Drama (NSD), Nawazuddin Siddiqui faced many challenges in finding work. He too has starred in two or three episodes of Doordarshan’s Parsai Kehate Hain. He later appeared in small roles in movies like Sarfarosh, Munna Bhai MBBS, and Shool. His noteworthy work in Kahaani made everyone notice him. He quickly shot to fame with Gangs of Wasseypur (1 and 2), The Lunchbox, Kick, Badlapur, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Raman Raghav 2.0 and Manto.
Mandira Bedi
Mandira Bedi became a popular face after she starred in Shanti- Ek Aurat Ki Kahani. She ventured into Bollywood later with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The actress is still active and was last seen in The Railwaymen, which is streaming on Netflix.
Renuka Shahane
Yet another actress who entered Bollywood after gaining fame in the TV industry is Renuka Shahane. She too worked in Circus and got further recognition for her work in the serial Surbhi. She became a household name after her movie opposite Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit, Hum Aapke Hain Koun.
Sakshi Tanwar
The famous Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki actress Sakshi Tanwar made her acting debut with Doordarshan’s tele-film Lalia. She has also hosted the singing reality show, Albela Sur Mela. She continues to be a prominent face in the entertainment industry after she worked in the TV show, Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, opposite Ram Kapoor. Later, she starred in Bollywood movies like Dangal and web series like Karrle Tu Bhi Mohabbat and Mai: A Mother’s Rage.
