Sophie Turner has finally opened up about her split with ex-husband Joe Jonas. Their divorce was first announced in September last year and it was reported that the actress was made aware of this via news portals. Joe and Sophie’s public divorce also involved a legal battle over their daughters moving to the UK and Joe’s ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift providing shelter to the actress in America. While the world was hooked on their divorce, for Sophie, “those were the worst few days of my life”.
Sophie Turner told British Vogue, “I remember I was on set, I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn’t leave. My kids were in the States and I couldn’t get to them because I had to finish Joan. And all these articles started coming out… It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother – mum guilt is so real! I just kept having to say to myself, ‘None of this is true. You are a good mum and you’ve never been a partier.’”
“There were some days that I didn’t know if I was going to make it. I would call my lawyer saying, ‘I can’t do this. I just can’t.’ I was just never strong enough to stand up for myself. And then, finally, after two weeks of me being in a rut, she reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for. Once anyone says to me, ‘Do it for your kids,’ I’m doing it. I wouldn’t do it for myself, but I’ll find the strength for them,” Sophie added.
When the legal battle between Sophie and Joe ensued in New York, Joe’s ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift lent her Tribeca apartment to Sophie and her kids. They were also often spotted out on dinners with Taylor’s friends. Recalling that time, Sophie added, “Taylor was an absolute hero to me this year,” “I’ve never been more grateful to anyone than I am for her because she took my children and me, and provided us with a home and a safe space,” she says. “She really has a heart of gold,” she said.
In September 2023, Joe and Sophie released a joint statement to confirm their divorce. “After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children,” their joint statement read. The divorce battle took an ugly turn when they fought over the custody of their children. Several allegations were made like Joe did not tell Sophie about the divorce and that Sophie’s party-girl lifestyle was the reason behind the split. However, the true reason is best known to the former couple, who have two daughters – Willa (4) and Delphine (22 months).
