Following the conclusion of DCEU, the comic book universe is gearing up for a fresh start with a new Superman movie, under the leadership of filmmaker and DC Studios head James Gunn. The movie stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan is the new Lois Lane and currently, filming is in progress. Since the announcement, Gunn has been delighting fans with behind the scenes glimpses and updates of the production. In a recent Thread post, the filmmaker shared a hilarious video from the set, offering a peek into the camaraderie among the cast and crew amidst their busy schedules. The clip features a monitor showing an animated Superman eating hamburgers, which Gunn reveals is the entertainment for the team during their lunch breaks on set.
Through his social media posts, Gunn has been cleverly indicating that the upcoming Superman film will offer a different tone compared to Henry Cavill’s portrayal, which was known for its darker and more serious approach. In an earlier update, Gunn shared that nearly 18% of the movie has already been filmed. Additionally, exciting news has surfaced online that the iconic Fortress of Solitude will be making an appearance in the upcoming DC movie. Meanwhile, sharing the latest video, the filmmaker wrote, “This is what Porkchop plays on our video assist screens when we go to lunch.”
Since the announcement of the new Superman movie, various rumours about the plot have circulated online, but James Gunn himself has debunked all of them. One such rumour suggested that the plot would follow Superman, as a young reporter, who goes on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent. However, Gunn clarified on Threads that this logline wasn’t entirely accurate. He claimed that Kent is not a ‘cub reporter’ but he’s a fully grown, thirty year old journalist. The filmmaker has been transparent about his thoughts on the project and often shoots down such rumours.
Talking about giving a fresh start to DC Studios, Gunn earlier shared, “We are telling a big, huge, central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we’re a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we’ve gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we’re also creating a universe that is like Star Wars, where there’s different times, different places, different things or Game of Thrones, where characters are a little bit more morally complex.”
Other than David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult is set to play the main villain, Lex Luthor. Superman is scheduled to release on July 11, 2025.
