Controversies are that extra baggage that almost every film star has to carry with them on their journey to stardom. Some of them have it way harder than the others. There are some celebrities who make equal news for their turmoil in their private life, as they do for their career. Legendary yesteryear actress Rekha falls into this bracket of such celebrities. She ruled the silver screen with her beauty, charm and acting chops in the 1970s and the 80s. Her first brush with personal turmoil was right in her childhood itself when her father, the famous Tamil actor Gemini Ganesan refused to acknowledge her as his daughter as she was born out of wedlock. Her mother was actress Pushpavalli.
She had a tumultuous relationship with her father Ganesan during her early years. When Simi Garewal asked Rekha about her father during an interview, she said that he had never even tried to know about her. Their relationship improved after Pushpavalli’s death.
The 69-year-old actresses’ name was associated with many Bollywood actors, but she never found stability in her love life. Rekha’s rumoured affair with Amitabh Bachchan is one of the most open secrets out there. He was not the first actor Rekha’s name was associated with. Rekha’s name was first associated with Jeetendra, who was already married back then. Their alledged relationship did not last long. Rekha was then rumoured to have been married to Kiran Kumar. While the marriage part is unconfirmed, a reported relationship certainly brewed between them. In an interview given to a magazine long back, Rekha said that Kiran Kumar was a mama’s boy, too obedient to his mother, which she did not like.
Following this, Rekha was linked to seasoned actor Vinod Mehra. They reportedly dated for a considerable amount of time, and there were even rumours that they were secretly married. Rekha refuted the rumour that she was married to Vinod Mehra in an interview with Simi Grewal. Later, Rekha married Delhi businessman Mukesh Aggarwal in 1990.
According to the book Rekha: The Untold Story by Yasser Usman, Mukesh was suffering from poor mental health, which Rekha did not know of prior to marriage. For this reason, Rekha had decided to distance herself from Mukesh. Amid this distance, Mukesh took his life one day, an incident that changed Rekha’s life forever. She was ridiculed by the press at that time, a period which one journalist termed as “the deepest trough in her life.”
