Aamir Khan, known for his discerning approach to selecting films, once opened up on the portrayal of violence and sex in cinema during an interview with Sushama Dutt. While in Vancouver for a show, Aamir had shared his views, saying that directors who fail to put together compelling narratives often resort to excessive use of these elements. He had said that relying heavily on violence and sex is a sign of creative deficiency.
Saying that he doesn’t enjoy films that rely heavily on violence and sex, Aamir had said, “I am noticing that cinema is getting more crude today. Lot of violence, lot of exploitation of sex is happening. I don’t like watching those movies and I don’t even like working in those movies either. I think cinema is a form of entertainment, you are entertaining your audience for three hours. You can entertain them in many ways – main saaf sutre taarike se unhe entertain karna chahta hoon. I want them to have a good time. There are a few emotions that are easy to provoke in the audience. Violence is one of them and sex is another. Those directors who are not that talented in creating a story or situations and creating emotions, rely heavily on violence and sex to make the film work. They think the more they put violence and sex in the film, the better chances of it of working. I think it’s a very wrong thing to do. May be, they will succeed quite a few times but it harms society. Actors, if not to a large extent but to a certain extent, are morally responsible. You should make sure that our films don’t have negative impact on the minds of the young generation that watches it.”
Meanwhile, on the work front, Aamir Khan’s is shooting for his upcoming Bollywood film, Sitaare Zameen Par.
