Dharmendra confessed he lost his cool at Javed Akhtar during the making of their 1969 film Yakeen and regretted it immediately. The veteran actor appeared in the new Amazon Prime Series, titled Angry Young Men, and looked back at working with Javed Akhtar in the film. For the unversed, Javed was the dialogue writer of the film. In the series, Dharmendra revealed he snapped at Javed because the pages featuring the dialogues were not arranged properly.
“When I was doing the film Yakeen, a thin boy came to give me the dialogues. He seemed lovely, very innocent. But the pages were out of order, and I threw them aside in annoyance. I snapped at him, and told him to bring the pages to me properly. I wonder why I did it. I felt very guilty about what I had done, because I understand the struggle that goes into working in the film industry,” he said in the series.
Soon after Yakeen released, Javed Akhtar crossed paths with Salim Khan. They decided to collaborate on Adhikar, which released in 1971 and the duo took off as one of the hottest writing duo in Bollywood. Their scripts were sold like hot cakes.
Dharmendra crossed paths with Javed again when they worked in Seeta Aur Geeta, which emerged as a blockbuster. They then reunited in Yaadon Ki Baaraat, which also went on to become a massive success. However, their biggest collaboration came in the form of Sholay. Javed and Dharmendra worked alongside Salim Khan and Amitabh Bachchan to deliver the cult film. Sholay, directed by Ramesh Sippy, ran in cinemas for five years.
Meanwhile, the Amazon Prime Video series sheds light on Salim-Javed’s work in Bollywood to their fallout. Salman Khan revealed Salim Khan had come home after their decision to part ways and was ‘disturbed’ about it. On the other hand, Javed’s first wife Honey Irani shared that Javed asked her not to question him about the split.
Salim-Javed worked on 24 movies together, of which 22 were blockbusters. Their biggest hits include Sholay, Don and Zanjeer. They parted ways in the early 1980s.
