Chennai: Tamil superstar Vijay’s much-hyped film ‘Puli’ has already created quite a stir amongst fan and industry insiders alike thanks to its lively promos, larger than life characters and intense promotional campaign. Now, after being in the news for well over two months, the film is all set to arrive in theatres this Thursday. Touted as a fantasy-drama, it has been directed by Chimbu Deven. Here is a quick look at why ‘Puli’ could be the proverbial next big thing in Tamil cinema.
A relatable storyline: Judging by the film’s power-packed trailer, ‘Puli’ revolves around the intense rivalry between a cruel queen and a virtuous warrior who tries to end her reign of terror. Interestingly, the clash between good and evil is a tried and tested concept that forms the foundation of numerous fairy tales such as ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ which are still enjoyed by kids and adults alike.
As such, ‘Puli’ is a movie that can well and truly be enjoyed by people from all walks of life. Moreover, the film‘s grand special effects could go a long in establishing it as a visual treat, enhancing its appeal amongst the younger generation.
Sridevi in a new avatar: It was in 2012 that Sridevi made a successful comeback to the film industry post an eight-year hiatus when she starred in the R Balki-produced ‘English Vinglish’. Now, with ‘Puli’ the veteran actress is on the verge of adding another feather to her cap.
In the film she essays a negative role and will be seen sporting a look that is totally different from anything she has donned previously. Interestingly, while Sridevi has in the past, essayed characters with a mean streak in outings such as ‘Chaalbaaz’ and ‘Laadla’, ‘Puli’ will a different ball game altogether, courtesy its scale. Hence, it will be worth watching whether the ‘Last Empress’ is able to do justice to her character.
Sudeep and Vijay’s rapport: Another major highlight of ‘Puli’ is the presence of Kannada megastar Sudeep. Judging by the trailer, it seems that he will be playing a grey character in the film. Interestingly, it was just a few years ago that the actor received tremendous critical acclaim for his brilliant portrayal of an arrogant villain in the revenge-drama ‘Naan Ee’. As such, it will be interesting to see whether ‘Kichha’ is able to deliver an equally mesmorising act this time around a well. Moreover, a lot will also depend on his chemistry with Vijay. If their rapport is crackling, the onscreen drama will reach a entirely different level altogether.
Add a new dimension to the Ajith-Vijay rivalry: Vijay’s last big screen outing ‘Kaththi’, which arrived in theatres in 2014, proved to be a big hit at the ticket window and earned rave reviews. If ‘Puli’ too manages to set the cash registers ringing it will go a long way in helping him continue his firm hold on the box office. Moreover, it will also give him a temporary advantage over his professional rival Ajith Kumar. This in turn will make it imperative for ‘Thala’ to strike gold with his upcoming film ‘Vedalam’.
