Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool and Wolverine crossed a milestone, with domestic ticket sales exceeding $600 million. The Marvel superhero sequel is one of the 16 films to have reached that milestone. After its release on July 26, the third instalment in the Deadpool franchise has shattered many box office records. It shot over the $1 billion mark in less than a month, making history as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
According to Comscore, it made over $600 million at the domestic box office after grossing approximately $15.1 million in the first three days of Labour Day weekend. The movie is expected to have made $603.8 million domestically and $1.25 billion worldwide after Monday’s earnings.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now the second highest-grossing film of the year and has occupied the top slot for five of the six weekends.
The light-hearted comedy may herald a promising new chapter for the Deadpool series, as it is the sole Marvel Cinematic Universe film of 2024 and the first since Disney purchased Fox.
Comscore reports that domestic revenues for the summer season concluded in 2019 at a decrease of 26.6% from the previous pre-COVID year and 14.3% from 2023.
Variety was informed by senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian that “a rather slow Labour Day weekend marks a quiet end to what turned out to be the comeback kid of summer seasons.”
They continued, “June and July delivered a monumental string of hits.”
After six weekends in theatres, Deadpool & Wolverine has only ranked first five times.
The ninth Alien movie to be released, Alien: Romulus, overtook it in its fourth week. The Hollywood Reporter states that Alien: Romulus opened to a domestic gross of $41.5 million that weekend, the second-best ever for the series.
It has since maintained its success, earning a projected $293.5 million worldwide, the second-highest of all the franchise’s films.
Meanwhile, it appears that the combination of powerful legacy characters in Deadpool & Wolverine contributed to the film’s success.
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine hadn’t appeared on the silver screen in seven years, since Logan (2017), and Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool hadn’t appeared in six, since Deadpool 2 (2018).
