Several actresses have time and again opened up about the gender pay gap in Bollywood and the latest on the list is Katrina Kaif. The actress, who is currently gearing up for the release of Merry Christmas, was recently speaking to Film Companion recently when she mentioned that it is a ‘tricky topic’. Katrina shared that it is not possible to talk about the pay gap in a word and added that it would be “incredible” to see a “little more equality”.
“And I think that’s a that’s a really really tricky topic. Because I have heard it being said that ‘look at the top 10 openings of male-led films, and look at the top 10 openings of just female-led films’. And more often than not, there’s a big disparity in the numbers,” Katrina said.
She argued it is often said that if there’s a big disparity in box office numbers between male-lead and female-lead films, then why should actresses get paid the same. “This is a tricky debate. I mean, who is to decide which ingredient is the most important to make a dish? A film is a combination of many ingredients. I personally think that it would be incredible to see a little more equality,” Katrina added.
However, the actress also admitted that things are now moving in the right direction and a change is being made.
Meanwhile, Katrina is gearing up for the release of Merry Christmas, which also stars Vijay Sethupathi in the lead. The film also stars Sanjay Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Pratima Kannan, Tinnu Anand, Radhika Sarathkumar, Shanmugaraja, Kevin Jay Babu, Rajesh Williams, and Pari. Ashwini Kalsekar and Radhika Apte will also be seen in cameos in the film. Merry Christmas is produced by Ramesh Taurani, Jaya Taurani, Sanjay Routray and Kewal Garg. It will hit theatres on January 12, 2024, in Hindi and Tamil.
