Loki Season 2 continues to detail The God of Mischief aka Tom Hiddleston’s dangerous exploits in the world of the Time Variance Authority (TVA). Loki met his demise at the hands of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. But the outcome of Endgame unveils a variant of the God of Mischief in Loki Season 1. Tom Hiddleston is pitted against Jonathan Majors aka He Who Remains, a powerful time-traveling entity who exists in numerous forms labeled “variants” across the multiverse. Now, during an interaction with Comic Book, the director of Loki Season 2 Kasra Farahani candidly spoke about the variant of He Who Remains shown in the ongoing Disney+ miniseries.
Notably, the variant versions of Jonathan Majors include the exiled warlord Kang the Conqueror introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In Loki Season 2, he features as the 19th-century industrialist Victor Timely. Introduced in the third episode, the antagonist is shown to have a timid personality with a stutter who acts like a con man. The director detailed how he worked alongside writers and producers to make this version of Kang feel distinct from the previous ones. “I think the first and foremost goal was to really take advantage of and milk the tension of the mystery around who this Kang variant was going to be,” he told Comic Book.
The filmmaker was aware of the hype surrounding the nature of the new Kang variant and it was fun for the makers to keep the details, “shrouded until that last moment where you finally see what he’s about and hopefully subvert some expectations.” Building Victor Timely was a memorable work for the director. He describes the character to be an “Einstein-like figure. This figure is brilliant and ahead of his time. He probably had a ton of potential.” But it isn’t only his crazy trajectory and super advanced human aura that makes him intriguing.
For the director, it is also Victor Timely’s charm, quirk, and several other shades that add volume to his creation. “He’s operating at a level higher than most people. And we wanted to see that. The charm and quirk and that disarming quality of him combined with his brilliance. But, there’s also this level of like a con man in him,” he explained.
The fifth episode of Loki Season 2 is scheduled to be released on Thursday, November 2.
