Former mayor of Mumbai and Shiv Sena leader Datta Dalvi was arrested on Wednesday for his derogatory remarks against Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde. The arrest follows a complaint filed by Shinde’s supporters who alleged that Dalvi made distasteful comments during a public gathering in Bhandup.
A case under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 153(a) (promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc), 153(b) (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration), 294 (obscene acts and songs) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) has been registered against Dalvi.
The former mayor was arrested from the Bhandup area, an official said, adding that further investigation into the matter is underway
Presently a part of the Thackeray faction, Dalvi held the office of mayor of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from 2005 to 2007 under the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance-led government. Before this, he was a corporator in the BMC for three successive terms.
According to police, Dalvi passed the remarks against CM Shinde at a meeting which was called by Shiv Sena (UBT) near the Bhandup police station.
“After that, a case was registered against Dalvi by the people of the Shinde faction,” police were quoted as saying.
Earlier this year, a case against Thackeray faction leader Sanjay Raut was registered for allegedly making derogatory remarks against CM Shinde.
Shinde faction’s office bearer Yogesh Beldar lodged a complaint at Panchavati police station in Nashik, alleging that Raut used derogatory against the chief minister during interaction with a TV channel and maligned the CM’s image.
On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered against Raut under IPC Section 500 (defamation), an official said.
Raut’s comments came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in an address during his visit to Pune, said those who chose to “lick the soles” of people with opposite ideologies have found which side truth was on after the Election Commission declared the faction headed by CM Eknath Shinde as the real Shiv Sena and gave it the ‘bow and arrow’ symbol.
Following this, Raut had said “What is the present chief minister licking? Maharashtra doesn’t give importance to what Shah says.”
