Rohit Shetty’s directorial film Cirkus failed to live up to the audience’s expectations at the box office. The film that was released in December last year starred Ranveer Singh, Pooja Hegde, Jacqueline Fernandez among others was touted to be the perfect Holiday entertainer but upon the film’s release, it was panned by critics and audiences alike. Now Rohit Shetty has spoken about the film’s failure.
During an interaction with Karan Johar in Koffee With Karan, when Rohit Shetty was asked about Cirkus not doing well, the film-maker promptly said, “Rohit Shetty failed as a director. Yes, we went wrong and it was a film made in the pandemic. It was made before Sooryavanshi released. Somewhere me, as a director went wrong with that film. And godo it was a small film that I went wrong with, not a big one. Three days later, I was shooting for my web series.”
Cirkus starred Ranveer Singh and Varun Sharma in dual roles. The movie also featured Pooja Hegde, Jacqueline Fernandez, Johny Lever, Sanjay Mishra, and Mukesh Tiwari, and is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors. The film also featured a special dance number by Deepika Padukone, titled Current Laga Re.
The latest episode of Koffee with Karan featured long-time friends and collaborators Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty on the couch. Ajay and Rohit have known each other for over 20 years and worked together on blockbuster films. While the episode sheds light on various anecdotes from their professional lives, Rohit Shetty opened up about the difficulties his family encountered after his father’s demise. He shared how his mother was strong enough to brave the difficulties and support the family.
In the latest episode, Karan Johar appreciatively spoke about Rohit Shetty’s career path. He shared that while the audience knows Rohit as the individual behind many commercially hit films, very few know the struggle he went through early in his life. Rohit Shetty’s father, M.B. Shetty, was a well-known stuntman who died when the filmmaker was about eight or nine years old.
Rohit Shetty shared that his family struggled financially until he was sixteen. His mother was also a stunt artist, and his parents met through their shared profession. But his mother left the job following their marriage. However, after his father’s death and the ensuing financial difficulty, she returned to work as a junior artist in films until Rohit began his career.
Rohit Shetty also shared details about his father’s early life. His father, who was born in Udupi, migrated to Mumbai when he was twelve or thirteen years old. He began as a waiter in Cotton Green before pursuing bodybuilding and boxing. Eventually, he tried for films after being advised by someone that his well-built physique would do him good in the industry. Rohit’s father then became a senior action director in the sector.
Meanwhile, after making his mark on the big screen, Rohit Shetty is now ready to delve into the realm of OTT with the series Indian Police Force. Rohit Shetty’s digital directorial debut is led by Sidharth Malhotra as a novel cop along with Shilpa Shetty Kundra, Vivek Oberoi, Shweta Tiwari, Nikitin Dheer, Rituraj Singh, Mukesh Rishi, and Lalit Parimoo. The series will stream exclusively on Prime Video on January 19. The teaser for Indian Police Force was released recently and gives a promising glimpse of the story that is to unfold. It is a seven-episode action-packed series and a heartfelt tribute to the selfless service, unconditional commitment, and fierce patriotism of police officers across the country who put everything on the line in the line of duty to keep the citizens safe.
