Filmmakers and artists frequently draw inspiration from their personal experiences and the works of others that have left a deep impact on their lives. This creative influence can be seen in various movies, books, television shows and even in comics. Recently, Shawn Levy, the director of Deadpool 3 shared his connection to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi in an essay for Esquire. He discussed the importance of the film in his life and revealed his plan to pay tribute to a specific scene from Episode 6 in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie. This homage will feature Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman recreating a scene that was once performed by Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker and David Prowse’s character Darth Vader.
Shawn wrote, “For one key scene in the movie, I said to my stunt and action team, ‘Guys, this is the Jedi moment.’ I pulled up that scene of Vader and Luke on my phone and restudied how it was photographed, how it was blocked, the framing, the tempo. The keen Star Wars fan will see the shot in my Deadpool movie that was inspired by a moment that I saw in a theatre decades ago. That’s a forever memory and that’s a treasure."
Further, recalling the scene from Return of the Jedi, Shawn Levy shared, “I went to the theatre again and again and I vividly remember the scene in which Luke is hiding from Vader in the Emperor’s room and Vader gives the speech that ends with ‘If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps your sister will.’ It was dead quiet. Pin drop silence. Suddenly Vader has pushed the wrong button. Luke comes screaming out of the shadows and just goes to town in a light saber battle against Vader. The way that felt, the forty seconds of stillness from the audience, then the spectacle and emotion, is seared not just in my eyeballs but in my heart."
In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Shawn Levy confirmed that Deadpool 3 is “very much part of the MCU." Despite this, the film will still be rated R due to its explicit dialogues and gory scenes. The filmmaker has also teased audiences with epic cameos, leaving Marvel enthusiasts speculating about the potential appearance of Taylor Swift as Dazzler. Meanwhile, Deadpool 3 which was originally scheduled to release in February 2024 has been delayed due to SAG-AFTRA strike and no new release date was announced.
