India’s vote in favour of UN’s resolution condemning settlement activities in the “Occupied Palestinian Territory, including Jerusalem and occupied Syrian Golan” was approved on Thursday, but it said “no change in its traditional stand” amid the Israel-Hamas war, according to top government sources.

“India will do everything in national interest. We have a huge population of Indians in the Middle East and Gulf countries working there. We have done basic home work of their safety and security,” said government sources.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had also made visits to some of these countries and ensured best relations so that India can ensure safety and security of Indians working there.

“We are in regular touch with all leaders and the Prime Minister also made some calls recently. India will not directly mediate in the negotiations but will definitely ensure that main players should also look at India’s interests,” the sources added.

India’s vote comes after it abstained from voting in the previous UN General Assembly draft resolution submitted by Jordan that called for immediate truce in the Israel-Hamas conflict. The resolution had made no mention of the Hamas terrorist group that launched an attack on Israel on October 7, triggering the subsequent war.

The UN draft resolution said, “Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan” – was passed with overwhelming majority. The seven countries that voted against the resolution included Canada, Hungary, Israel, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, United States.

So far, all Indians in the Middle-Eastern countries are “safe”, and Indian Missions are watching the situations unfolding amidst the ongoing war closely.
