After several central ministries and states announced concessions and reservation in jobs for ‘Agniveers’, industrialists Harsha Goenka and Anand Mahindra on Monday chipped in with offers to employ from among the recruits who will leave the program after a four-year stint with the Army, Navy or the Air Force.
The Centre had last week unveiled the ambitious Agnipath scheme for the recruitment of youths aged between 17-and-a-half and 21 in the three services, largely on a four-year short-term contractual basis. After the completion of the four-year tenure, 25 per cent of the recruits from each batch will be offered regular service.
Protests in several cities expressing concerns over job security and age caps despite recruitments being stalled for the last two years soon turned violent with mass destruction to public property, particularly in Bihar.
On Thursday night, the government raised the upper age limit for recruitment under the scheme to 23 years for 2022, which was soon followed by announcements of 10% reservation in jobs in the Home and Defence ministries.
Here’s a list of incentives and job reservations announced for Agniveers so far:
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced 10% quota in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles for Agniveers. “The MHA also decides to give 3 years age relaxation beyond the prescribed upper age limit to Agniveers for recruitment in CAPFs and Assam Rifles,” the Ministry of Home Affairs tweeted. Further, for the first batch of Agniveers, the age relaxation will be for five years beyond the prescribed upper age limit, it said. At present, jawans between the age of 18-23 years are recruited into the paramilitary forces.
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a meeting with the chiefs of the three services — Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, and Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari – on Saturday and announced 10% reservation in jobs for Agniveers. The reservation will be implemented in the Indian Coast Guard and defence civilian posts, and all the 16 Defence Public Sector Undertakings. This would be in addition to the existing quota for ex-servicemen.
- The Ministry of Civil Aviation has said it is looking forward to inducting the highly skilled, disciplined, and motivated Agniveers into its various services.
- The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways also announced six service avenues for smooth transition of Agniveers in various roles in merchant navy, post their stint with the Indian Navy.
- Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said the PSUs under his Housing and Petroleum ministries are working on hiring Agniveers after their four-year service in the armed forces.
- The National Institute of Open Schooling has announced that it will institute a special programme in consultation with the defence authorities to help Agniveers clear Class 10 and obtain a Class 12 pass certificate by developing customized courses that are not only current but relevant to their area of service. This certificate is recognised for both employment and higher education purposes across India.
- The Ministry of Education has decided to launch a special three-year skill-based Bachelor degree programme for serving defence personnel that will recognize the skill training received by them during their tenure in the defence establishments.
- Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said his government will give priority to Agniveers for recruitment in police and related services in the state.
- Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said his government will also give preference in jobs to youth who complete Agnipath service.
- Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced that under the Agniveer Yojana, priority will be given to soldiers working in the Army in Madhya Pradesh police recruitment.
- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that those completing four years of service will be given preference in recruitment to the state police.
- The Karnataka government will induct Agniveers into the state police after completion of their service in the Agnipath scheme.
- Condemning the violence and backing the Agnipath scheme, industrialist Anand Mahindra announced on Twitter that the Mahindra Group welcomes the opportunity to recruit Agniveers. “Saddened by the violence around the #Agneepath program. When the scheme was mooted last year I stated-& I repeat-the discipline & skills Agniveers gain will make them eminently employable. The Mahindra Group welcomes the opportunity to recruit such trained, capable young people,” he said.
- Entrepreneur Harsh Goenka, too, made a similar pledge on Twitter and urged other corporates to do so as well. “The RPG group too welcomes the opportunity to employ the Agniveers. I do hope other corporates will also join us to take this pledge and assure our youths of a future.”
