Apple could be planning to replace the outgoing 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the mini LED display, introducing a new 13-inch OLED model in 2024. Consequently, the outgoing model will be discontinued, as per Taiwanese research company Trendforce.
This implies that the 12.9-inch iPad Pro might be entirely removed from the lineup, and won’t be offered at a cheaper price tag. Notably, this comes after no iPad releases from Apple throughout 2023.
“The shipment volume for Mini LED notebooks is estimated to decrease by approximately 39% YoY. Meanwhile, with the 12.9-inch iPad Pro expected to be discontinued in 2024, the shipment volume of Mini LED tablets is expected to decrease by about 15.6% YoY, making these two the only applications expected to decline,” Trendforce reports.
With the switch to OLED panels, iPads are expected to draw less power and offer a better viewing experience compared to miniLED. Analyst Ross Young has also mentioned that Apple could use thin hybrid OLED displays, potentially resulting in a redesigned, thinner form factor.
Additionally, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has mentioned that Apple will launch updated iPad Pro models in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, featuring new OLED panels, and move to the Apple M3 3nm chipset, and a new Magic Keyboard.
The release date for these OLED models in 2024 remains to be seen. However, as 2023 passed without any new releases, Mark Gurman indicates an overall overhaul for the entire iPad lineup next year. This could involve updated versions of the iPad mini, iPad Air, and perhaps even the next version of the iPad 10th generation.
