Delhi University students may now choose to pursue a “joint or dual degree” as an option for both undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) programmes. According to the Times of India (ToI), the procedures for awarding dual degree programmes have been prepared by the university. In the first phase, the university plans to allow students to pursue a degree in tandem via regular and distance learning. In addition, collaborations with foreign universities are also being planned by the varsity, which will give students the chance to spend a semester studying abroad.
During the academic council meeting tomorrow, November 30, the proposal is expected to be discussed, reports add. A proposal for a “Twinning degree programme with a Foreign Higher Education Institution (FHEI)” will be discussed at the academic council meeting.
A committee was formed by the university in December 2022 to investigate the viability of a combined degree programme that complies with the National Education Policy 2020’s requirements. Under this programme, students from the University of Delhi and its colleges can study abroad for a semester and earn credits that count towards their degree requirements.
The collaboration will concentrate on FHEIs ranked among the top 500 in the QS World University Ranking. Students may study at a foreign university for one semester, earning a minimum of 18 credits and a maximum of 26 credits. Following discussions with stakeholders, the university is also considering the possibility of joint PhD degrees.
Details On Two Academic Programmes:
As far as pursuing two academic programmes goes, the university states that during the first stage, students can only pursue one programme through open and distance learning (ODL) / online and one through full-time physical mode. The college principal or the department head should be contacted by anyone interested in enrolling in a dual degree programme at the university.
It is important to note that students are not permitted to pursue two identical academic programmes, such as BCom (H) and BCom (P), at the same time, even if one of them is meant to be completed online or through ODL. If a student is allowed to pursue two academic degree programmes at the same time, they must independently complete all of the requirements for each programme, including attendance, internal and continuous assessments, assignment, presentation, and exam submission.
In addition, the research theme or topic for the two different degrees must be different for research projects, dissertations, or entrepreneurial endeavours in the last year of the undergraduate programme.
