Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has parted ways with Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 to join his old franchise Kolkata Knight Riders. His 2-year-long association with the franchise as a mentor, which made its tournament debut in 2022, came to an end on Wednesday as the former cricketer confirmed the development through a social media post.
Taking to microblogging site X, Gambhir announced the end of his journey with LSG. He also expressed his gratitude towards the players of the team, support staff and everyone associated with the franchise.
“As I announce the end of my impeccable journey with Lucknow Super Giants, I am filled with love and immense gratitude towards all the players, coaches, support staff and every individual who has made this journey memorable. I would like to thank Dr. Sanjiv Goenka for his inspiring leadership while creating this remarkable franchise and for his tremendous support to all my endeavours,” Gambhir posted on Wednesday.
“I’m sure that the team will do wonders in the future and will make every LSG fan proud. All the very best LSG brigade,” he added.

Welcoming Gambhir back to KKR, co-owner and Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan said, “Gautam has always been part of the family and this is our Captain coming back home in a different avatar as a “Mentor”. He was sorely missed and now we all look forward to Chandu Sir and Gautam in instilling the never-say-die spirit and of sportsmanship they stand for, in creating magic with Team KKR.”
Earlier in August, News18 CricketNext had reported that Gambhir could leave the franchise due to Lok Sabha elections in 2024.
