MoS Chandrasekhar Outlines 4 Major AI Questions to be Discussed at GPAI Delhi Summit for Global Framework
A global framework for AI will be the central theme of the New Delhi summit --- from December 12-14 --- with the possibility of having this framework in place by the South Korea summit in 2024

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, highlighted the critical questions surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) safety and trust which will be asked and discussed during the upcoming Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) summit in New Delhi with a focus on creating a global framework.

He emphasised the need to establish a global framework for AI, ensuring that AI models are labelled safe and trusted before being accessible to consumers. Chandrasekhar called for discussions and debates on these issues at the forthcoming GPAI Summit, which is scheduled between December 12 and 14.

The minister referred to the recently held first AI safety summit in the UK, which saw the participation of 28 countries, civil society, and academics. During this summit, concerns related to AI safety and trust were addressed, culminating in the Bletchley Declaration.

Chandrasekhar specifically said: “AI should not be demonised as it represents an opportunity not only in India but globally.” Furthermore, he stressed the importance of determining different types of harm caused by AI, such as workforce disruption, privacy infringement, noncriminal harm, weaponisation, and criminalisation.

Chandrasekhar outlined four key questions that will be discussed at the GPAI Summit among all the like-minded countries which believe that AI should be productive, it must create opportunities for growth and investment but also it should be safe and trusted.

• How do we determine safety and trust in AI platforms?

• Who will determine safety and trust and what is the process for establishing that?

• How do we address different categories of harm caused by AI?

• What is the model that all countries can agree to?

A global framework for AI will be the central theme of the New Delhi summit, with the possibility of having this framework in place by the South Korea summit in 2024.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is set to lead the GPAI initiative and host the GPAI Summit, reinforcing India’s commitment to advancing AI technology while ensuring safety and trust. The summit will convene experts and stakeholders to discuss various aspects of AI, including responsible AI, data governance, the future of work, and innovation and commercialisation.

The summit in New Delhi, expected to be attended by political leaders from 28 member countries and prominent figures from the AI industry such as OpenAI, Sam Altman and DeepMind’s Mustafa Suleyman, is poised to make significant strides in the global conversation surrounding AI safety and trust.
