Mumbai City FC co-owner Ranbir Kapoor could not make the Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 final between his team and ATK Mohun Bagan at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa on Saturday after he was struck by coronavirus and is in isolation. With Ranbir absent, the Islanders went on beat the Mariners 2-1 and clinched their first-ever ISL title. Mumbai City FC became only the second team to have topped the points table and win the title in the same season.
While it was a great day in MCFC’s history, Ranbir, who is recovering from coronavirus, could not travel to Goa and instead his mother Neetu Kapoor filled in for him. Neetu even celebrated the moment with the team on the pitch. Ranbir girlfriend Alia Bhatt shared a picture of Neetu Kappor enjoying with the team and celebrated the team’s victory on Instagram.
Along with sharing Neetu’s picture, Alia also shared a montage of Mumbai City FC celebrating them becoming the ISL champions.
Bipin Singh became the hero scoring the winning goal as goalkeeper Arindam Bhattacharja’s howler helped Mumbai City FC score the second goal. MCFC played a long ball and Jhingan and Tiri were covering Bartholomew Ogbeche. However, Arindam came outside the box and tried to chest handle the ball and ended up spilling it. Jhingan took the goalpost while Tiri tried to cover Ogbeche, who did extremely well to take two touches and lay on a plate for Bipin. ATKMB had taken the lead in the match through David Williams but a Tiri own goal had allowed MCFC back into the game.

It was tragic for ATKMB and Arindam was inconsolable even though he won the Golden Glove. There is extreme joy for MCFC as coach Sergio Lobera was beeming and Mourtada Fall was seen getting emotional.
After the match, Ogbeche celebrated the victory saying, “It was Mumbai Indians some time ago and now Mumbai City FC, Mumbai rules the country let’s go.” Adam Le Fondre, on the other hand, said he had come to India and MCFC to win trophies and it was good to have done that.
While Bipin simply “felt amazing” having scored the winner, MCFC keeper Amrinder Singh was all praise for him. “Bipin adapted to the new coach extremely well and he works very hard in the training and which is why he got the goal and luck today,” he said.
“It’s a great feeling to finish top of the table and then to keep the same level mentally and physically, it’s not easy. After winning a trophy (ISL Shield), keeping the same focus and winning another. I am very proud of the my team, it’s not easy to get two trophies,” Amrinder added.
Coach Lobera called the victory a “big teamwork” and said the level of Indian players in the squad was key to winning trophies. “As a coach, it is important to know their level so that they can show that. It’s not only about Bipin but I am very proud of my players,” he said.
