PV Sindhu had to settle for a silver at Swiss Open 2021 on Sunday after a crushing loss to Spaniard Carolina Marin. Sindhu was no match to Marin as she lost 12-21, 5-12 in just 35 minutes. This was the shortest final of the day and one where the Indian was merely a spectator to Marin’s confident and pace-filled play. Sindhu was looking for her first title since the World Championships but it was not to be as Marin looked like a woman on mission and screamed her way to glory. Marin dominated Sindhu from the start to the end of the game as she won her third title of the year.
Sindhu had reached her first final since 2019 World Championships and was looking to go toe-to-toe with Marin. However, the Spaniard didn’t give her an inch and all she was subjected to was disappointment and embarrassment.
By the end of the match, Sindhu’s face was also full of dejection as she looked completely out of ideas on how to tackle Marin.
In the beginning, Sindhu did try to work around Marin and there was the infamous battle of delay and quickness between the two as well. Early in the first game, Marin had the lead and tried to serve quickly but the umpire asked her to serve again because Sindhu wasn’t ready. Prior to this the umpire had also asked Sindhu to get ready quicker. Marin had a word with the umpire about not seeing that Sindhu was not ready but he said, “(to Marin) you see, (to Sindhu) you get ready quickly and we won’t have this problem.”
Recently, there has been a lot of talks about Sindhu training in the Gachibowli stadium instead of the regular Gopichand Academy. She has said that she has shifted her training venue to get accustomed to bigger halls like the one they will play in at Tokyo Olympics.
Ahead of the final, Sindhu even said that training at the bigger hall in Gachibowli has helped her in Basel as well. However, nothing of that worked in the final where she was completely outplayed.
Towards the end, the commentator even said, “More than just nutrition and practice at Gachibowli is required for Sindhu.”
Ranked seventh in the world, Sindhu will most definitely make it to the Tokyo Olympics but before that she has a lot of work to do.
