Australia pacer Mitchell Starc became the most expensive player in the history of IPL after he was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore at the auction earlier this week. Starc’s fellow countryman and Australia skipper Pat Cummins was also signed by SunRisers Hyderabad for a whopping amount of Rs 20.50 crore. Cummins currently holds the record for the second-most expensive cricketer in IPL history. India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, who was retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of the IPL 2024 auction, recently shared his views on this matter. Karthik stated that he is not a “big fan of players coming straight into mini auctions.
Sharing his opinion on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Dinesh Karthik wrote, “I’m not a big fan of players coming straight into MINI auctions and I feel foreign players and their agents seem to use it cleverly because they see a loophole there.”

“Third trend is an unhealthy one. What I have noticed is the mini-auction is used by players and agents very cleverly, where they bring them in mini auction and they go for absurd and unheard of prices knowing that the teams come in with a lot of money and they have holes to fill. hence, the price skyrockets to a whole different level,” Dinesh Karthik was heard saying in the video shared by him on X.
The previous record for most expensive buy in IPL history was set by England’s Sam Curran. The Englishman scripted the record after he was signed by Punjab Kings for Rs 18.50 crore at the IPL 2023 auction.
coming back to Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, the Aussie pace duo had a memorable outing in India recently after being crowned World Cup champions. In the World Cup final, Australia, under the leadership of Cummins, got the better of India to lift the World Cup trophy. Starc, on the other hand, will now be aiming to make a memorable comeback to IPL next year. The left-arm Aussie pacer had made his last IPL appearance back in May 2015.
