The University Grants Commission (UGC) has encouraged universities and colleges under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY 4.0) to set up ‘skill hubs’. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) decided to create skill hubs in varsities and colleges of national significance in order to broaden the delivery network and provide skill-building courses outside of the conventional skill-building establishments, as per a report by Careers360.
“As part of the expansion of the delivery network and offer skilling programs beyond the traditional skilling institutions, MSDE has decided to assign/establish ‘Skill Hubs’ at identified Higher Education Institutions of national repute under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0),” reads the official notice. The Skill India platform – admin.skillindiadigital.gov.in/Skillhub, allows the HIEs’ administrations to digitally manage the scheme’s operations. The platform also allows the HIEs to request courses or jobs based on their qualifications.
The commission has informed that this is a particular effort of the Government of India, and the involvement of HEI’s would be beneficial in developing a skilling ecosystem.
With PMKVY 4.0, the government-funded skilling programme, many flagship initiatives have been developed to better align with the evolving demands of the market and the economy. These improvements include on-the-job training, growing the network of skilling institutions for integration with education, providing skilling for all, and offering training in cutting-edge courses pertinent to relevant industries. Since 2015, the MSDE has been using PMKVY to provide short-term skill training in order to develop a workforce that is prepared for a variety of industries and employment vocations.
What Is PMKVY?
The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is responsible for implementing PMKVY, the MSDE’s flagship programme. The programme’s goal is to provide young people with the opportunity to pursue industry-relevant skill training that will enable them to secure better employment in the future.
The objectives of the PMKVY Scheme include promoting an enabling environment for youngsters to learn new skills and pick a career path that matches their talents and desires, making the existing skilling ecosystem more flexible, quick, and geared to meet rising demand in order to offer skill training in a market-oriented and demand-driven way. It also includes the process of redesigning the skill ecosystem via the use of technology, creative funding and digitalisation.
