It has just taken a few tweets by Navjot Singh Sidhu to expose how brittle the peace in Punjab Congress is. Less than a week after the High command claimed to have brokered a peace deal between Sidhu and Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, the crickter-turned-politician on Sunday yet again publicly expressed his angst against top government appointments.
Sidhu took to twitter yet again to target the Punjab government over two key appointments of the Advocate General (AG) and officiating Director General of Police (ADGP). “Demand for Justice in Sacrilege cases and for arrest of main culprits behind the drug trade brought our Govt in 2017 & Due to his failure, People removed the last CM. Now, AG / DG appointments rub salt on wounds of victims, they must be replaced or we will have No face !!, tweeted Sidhu.
On Thursday, after Sidhu and Channi had met in presence of Congress observer Harish Chaudhary, the party had indicated that the PCC chief had been pacified and a three-member panel has been constituted for looking into the issues raised by him. Interestingly, the panel included Sidhu himself triggering interpretation that the high command had succumbed to his threats.
Significantly, party leaders had maintained that a formal statement on the formation of the panel would be issued but that did not happen. In the meantime, Sidhu fired his salvos through twitter. On Saturday, he wrote a cryptic tweet maintaining that he stood firmly with by the Gandhi’s. “Will uphold principles of Gandhi Ji & Shastri Ji… Post or No Post will stand by @RahulGandhi & @priyankagandhi! Let all negative forces try to defeat me, but with every ounce of positive energy will make Punjab win, Punjabiyat (universal brotherhood) win & every Punjabi win!! (sic)”.
The second tweet today was indicative of Sidhu being unrelenting and that the peace deal was fragile. His supporters claim Sidhu was not showing any flexibility sensing that the emotive issue of sacrilege and also drug mafia could resonate majorly in the upcoming assembly elections.
They pointed out that the demand for justice in sacrilege and arrest of culprits in drug trade had capitulated Congress to power in 2017 and failure to deliver on the promise had already taken scalp of Capt Amarinder Singh. “This is one reason he is sticking to his demand for appointments which will be seen as an attempt to bring justice in the two cases,’’ said one of his associates
Sidhu’s statement comes at a time when the party leadership wants to retain him as PPCC chief, despite strong resistance from different quarters.
